This week, I made the decision to switch my specialization from Digital Marketing and Social Media Management (DMSM) to Public Relations (PR). It’s a decision I’ve been thinking about for a while, and hearing Mitali Gupta, a public relations professional and content creator, share her experience gave me a lot of faith and excitement about what’s next. Her experience gave me an insight into the lively, multifaceted world of public relations, and I felt more confident than before in my decision.
Mitali’s journey was not a straightforward one. She had originally planned to work in journalism but was drawn to public relations after developing an interest in brand storytelling. It was not the career she had envisioned, but it turned out to be the ideal fit. After studying public relations in Canada, she entered the agency world, working with clients in beauty, wellness, and other industries, and she now thrives as an account executive for high-profile brands.
One thing that stood out to me was how Mitali outlined the benefits of working in an agency early on. She explained that starting with an agency provided her with a diverse set of experiences and introduced her to a variety of customers and techniques. This allowed her to quickly learn how to adapt public relations campaigns to specific targets and audiences, a skill she uses on a daily basis.
One of her most notable campaigns was for Dairy Farmers of Ontario, which featured citywide “Everybody Milk” initiatives such as large billboards, a live event at Yonge-Dundas Square, and extensive social media coverage. Hearing how she handled press releases, influencer collaborations, and even a live appearance on Breakfast Television made me understand that a public relations job can go well beyond crisis management and social media. It’s all about generating unforgettable experiences and bringing businesses to life via creative storytelling.
Mitali also gave insight into the current landscape, emphasizing the rise of video content and how she uses tools like Canva and CapCut to keep up with demand. It’s clear that PR in the modern day combines traditional communication with creative social media marketing.
Her advice to stay curious, passionate, and committed to learning stuck with me. She emphasized that if you actually enjoy the work, it won’t feel like a chore. So, after hearing her story, I’m feeling more motivated and eager to start this new journey.
