Mitali Gupta: Influencer Extroardinaire
By Will Shoukri
Welcome back to another week perched in the Owls Nest! The Owls Nest is Guelph-Humbers most popular media studies blog, interviewing intustry experts to inform students.
This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Mitali Gupta, a social media influencer and PR manager. Gupta has over 120 thousand followers on Instagram and currently works as the PR manager for BlueDoor Industry.
Content Creation, Social Media, and PR
Since Gupta has a different relationship with PR than most professions; currently working as an influencer and PR manager. I wanted to find out the link between the two. How does social media content creation interract or impact their operations as public relations professionals?
“In the social media era, content is so important – The influence the internet has is far greater than anything else”.
So Pr professionals don’t just have to be aware of the content social media has, it actually has to be a part of it s well.
“We need to be posting on our social medi every day. Press releases, product launches, as much as it is important to give all our communication to the media (print, broadcast, magazines), we also have to give our influencers and social media that information”.
In the age of social media, your socials are your most direct form of communication. Not just for your customers, but also the brands you are partnered with.
Is PR still writing-based?
Since Gupta is a social media expert working in an industry that is often percieved as being writing-forward. I wanted to know what she found the most effective strategy to bridge the gap between social media marketing or make her PR content more succesful.
“So personally, I think that videos are definitely doing great right now. I think written content is for a specific demographic that really likes reading – I feel like its related to building your reputation, it adds credibility but I would say video always does better”.
So copywriting is no longer PR’s strongest asset. It may come as a suprise to many journalism students turned PR professionals but visual content is king in the world of social media.
That is going to be all from us at the Owls Nest this week! I would like to thank Mitali Gupta for taking the time out of her day to sit with us; you can find her @mitalii.guptaa on Instagram.
Tune in next week when I interview data analyst Nitin Goyal. Until then, spread your wings and soar on the winds of information GH Owls!
