My photography assignment was a retelling of the story of the Last Unicorn, based on The Unicorn Tapestries. The tapestries depict  hunters and their hounds chasing a unicorn after realising it has magical properties. The unicorn is coaxed into an enclosure by a virgin maiden, safe from the violence but ultimately alone and trapped (Source: Wikipedia).

Instead of depicting the unicorn surrounded by fences, I wanted to focus on a part of the story that is often left out: the betrayal of the maiden. The cut-out heart and arrow embedded in the chest of the unicorn is a representation of the physical and emotional pain the unicorn feels after being deceived by someone they trust.

Did you know that high school kids are using ‘unalived’ as a substitute for ‘killed’ in their essays? But what does unalive mean? And why do we keep using it?

Land Acknowledgement

The University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College are located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Black Alders” in the Mississauga language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all. We acknowledge and honour the land we are walking on, the moccasin tracks of our ancestors and the footprints of the future generations to come.
