Reflection

Looking back to the beginning of the semester, my skillset has grown both technically and creatively. At first, I only had a basic understanding of composition, storytelling, and editing. However, this class helped me improve my media abilities by turning multiple media forms into creative projects that were thoughtfully planned and executed. For example, comparing my early photo assignment to my most recent video assignment, there is a clear improvement and understanding in framing, lighting, and shot types that help to enhance the overall appeal of my work and its intent + purpose. I also became more confident in using editing software like Premiere Pro, as before this class, I knew nothing about it and was rather overwhelmed by its perceived difficulty and complexity. Being able to feel more comfortable in navigating the software definitely gives me a sense of accomplishment in overcoming that perception.

My favourite part of the process was the post-production planning by using moodboards and storyboards to bring my ideas to life, as well as the hands-on creation. I really enjoyed filming, experimenting with different angles, and finding ways to visually communicate emotion or meaning. The video assignment also helped me learn that I really enjoy editing and putting my ideas in place, maybe even more than the actual production process. Seeing a concept slowly turn into a finished product was always rewarding. My least favourite part was operating the camera and dealing with any technical issues, both during the production and editing, like software issues, and navigating the errors of the music and sound effects from my audio assignment not being visible when exporting it. Although it was frustrating at times, it did teach me to improve my problem-solving and patience.

The most significant thing I learned was that strong media production relies heavily on pre-planning, scripting and storyboarding to make the process run more smoothly and create cleaner, more intentional work. Throughout this process, I learned that I value detail, clarity, and creative decision-making just as much as the technical execution.

The most challenging part of creating my media content was pushing through moments when I doubted my ideas or couldn’t get something to look the way I envisioned. Learning to trust my own creativity, not rushing the process, and knowing that improvement comes with practice were important lessons I learned through these difficult moments.

The project I am most proud of is the video assignment because it reflects my technical progress and my ability to tell a story visually. I was able to help deliver my brother’s story and translate his motivations into a meaningful visual narrative, which represents the kind of intentional, purpose-driven work I want to continue creating in my future career as a social media digital marketer. That is, helping people/brands gain a voice and deliver their story to increase brand awareness and success.

Overall, this course helped me grow not just as a student, but as a creator, by utilizing the skills I gained–storytelling, photography, editing, filming, and audio design–to give me a stronger foundation for all the work I may produce in the digital industry and in my future career.
