How To: Plan A Disaster Of A Halloween Party & Succeed Anyway

Based on true events. I did, in fact, throw a last minute Halloween party… and it turned out great.

What does it mean to be human? To fear dying, to want to be remembered rather than forgotten. To achieve this, humanity has created countless artworks throughout our existence.

Reflection

When the semester began, I was certain I was comfortable editing video and audio, since I’d done so in my high school classes and in my own personal time. However, as we started working, I noticed that I was only getting better and more used to the editing tools available. Where the music was too loud on the audio assignment, my video assignment had a better grasp on volume control. With so many hours put into editing, I can safely say one of my biggest improvements is patience and audio editing. I loved learning how to use the zoom recorders and cameras, but trying to keep visual snow off the screen was a nightmare for me. I already have visual snow syndrome, so it was definitely a challenge to get good quality pictures and video (see: pictures 2, 5, & 10 in the photo series).

Some of my proudest work this semester is photos 1 & 3 specifically, and the main cut of the video assignment. Even looking back onto the photo series, 1 & 3 always evoke a very deep sadness in me, which was my goal. The dramatic lighting and close-up perfectly shows the melancholy feeling of the theme. The video assignment was also so fun to put together, aside from the frustrating experience it was to actually gather the clips, when I got to editing I was having a blast trying to see which clip would work best for the interview and specific moment in the background song. I know I’ll lose marks for not having video of the interview, but it was the only one I could get in time and he refused to be recorded, which was extremely frustrating.

Throughout the semester, my small tolerance for nonsense was only proven time and time again, as I experienced both technical and life problems. Luckily, I also got to practice those handy coping skills from therapy and calm down before breaking something. I also had to give myself some grace for the visual aspects, since I could never find someone to check if my shots had little to no visual snow before submitting (see: 00:19, 01:00, & 02:11 of the main cut).

I’ve already been able to put these skills to use in other classes, and I hope that what I learned this year sticks with me, to make future classes easier and to better my own personal projects. I want to explore more photography and photo editing, along with audio editing. This class really interested me and I can’t wait to learn more in the coming years!
