Dee Thomson is a beauty blogger, but she’s also a youtube influencer, an interviewer, a model, and over all simply a creator in the beauty industry.
We could spend hours defining what a creator is, what an influencer does, and all the nitty gritty that an influencer puts in to promo’ing without sound like a shill, but personally, what I gathered most from Dee Thomson was that she was doing her favourite things. That’s the most important thing to learn from any influencer.
Back when I was a top 1% twitch streamer, I played League of Legends and I was bored to death doing that. After a year, two years, three years, how much League of Legends can you play? I put time and effort into creating an identity online, maintaining a consistent style guide, creating a personality that is me but not me. In the end, I abandoned it all and scampered away because, yes, of a toxic gaming community, but also because I just simply wasn’t enjoying it.
People often say “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Never has that felt more true than watching Dee Thomson talk endlessly about a subject I do not care about; because she made me want to care. People can tell when you’re faking it. People can tell when you’re using a product you were gifted by a company. Honesty is an attribute not to be pursued because it will convince people to trust you and buy your product, but because if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, you’ll get bored, feel terrible, and… well, maybe not fail, but give it all up.
It seems so obvious to say “Do what you love!”, but that has always been excruciatingly difficult. How does one write, play games, and talk to other influencers for a living?
Well, you don’t.
Dee Thomson, instead, says to enjoy yourself however you can. Whatever you’re working on, if you’re enjoying it, then you’ll find a way to write, play games, and chat with other influencers.
It all comes down to honesty.
