This week I got to learn from Nitin Goyal, who is a data analyst who works at Hootsuite. Nitin talks about social media and how it is a platform that constantly changes over time. Through his teachings, I am able to learn more about managing social media and the many things that are important to factor in choosing what to do.

Guest Speaker: Nitin Goyal

Nitin talked about how social media is constantly changing and there are multiple tools and factors to look at like algorithms. Something that I took from this is that you have to understand the algorithm in order to captivate the audience. Content still has to be engaging and entice the audience but the algorithm looks to make the audience spend more time on the platform while getting money from advertisements. He specifically stated that the content should be more personalized to the audience to get more engagement with the content. This can be important when the way you present content can change how people engage with it.

Another aspect that was brought up during the presentation was ROIs and KPIs. These were also brought up in the lecture but it is important to note that these are used to essentially measure progress or success on a certain project. Something that stuck with me was ROIs (Return on investments) as this can be typically used on anything. As I work in school or a job, it is important to factor in this so I can find out if something is worth my time or if I should take an opportunity.

Overall Reflections

Overall, Nitin’s insights have been able to give me knowledge not only about social media but also about my overall career. Near the end of the presentation, he gives advice on looking for a career and factoring in happiness while looking at success. Along with ROIs, it is important to think about how an opportunity benefits you not only monetary but also for happiness.

Land Acknowledgment

The University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College are located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Black Alders” in the Mississauga language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all. We acknowledge and honour the land we are walking on, the moccasin tracks of our ancestors and the footprints of the future generations to come.
