Hi there! Welcome back to my weekly blogs where we determine whether the speaker is worth your time and energy! Last week, we looked at Nitin Goyal, a data analyst for Hootsuite. From his presentation, we determined that he was a thank you, NEXT, since he failed to keep me interested throughout his presentation, and only mentioned a few points that were of interest to me.

This week, our guest presenter is Nneka Elliot, a TV personality, news and weather anchor, actor, and content creator. Her career path ranges among a variety of media jobs, yet she is primarily a content creator and focused her presentation on that niche.

Since the beginning of her presentation, I already knew she was a pass. It wasn’t so much about her career, the places she worked or the stuff she said, it was about the way she said them. During her presentation, I felt very connected with her. It felt like she was very genuine and honest. During the presentation, she mentioned that it’s important to stay true to yourself no matter what you do, and I liked that. As a content creator, you can often forget about your values and what’s important to you since you’re trying to create content that will interest others, and gain you more engagement. In terms of Nneka, she thinks the opposite. She believes that you should stay true to yourself no matter what, and that despite anything people will still be interested in you, especially if you’re honest.

She mentioned how many stopped following her when she had a kid because the content wasn’t in their interest. I feel like it is important to understand that it can happen, and it is ok. If you are not someone’s interest anymore, that is ok, because there might be others who will follow you and like your content even more. It stuck with me when she was talking about it, especially because it showed how honest and real she is in her content creation. She is not trying to build a perfect image, but rather show the realities of motherhood, the struggles and the problems that come with it, and that is what I value the most.

Overall, I can gladly say her presentation was a SUCCESS. I enjoyed listening to her experiences, her way of doing things as well as her path. This individual seemed honest and made me feel like I could trust whatever she was saying.

Thank you, PASS.

Land Acknowledgment

The University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College are located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Black Alders” in the Mississauga language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all. We acknowledge and honour the land we are walking on, the moccasin tracks of our ancestors and the footprints of the future generations to come.
