Welcome to Sophia’s Stamp. In this blog, I will determine whether the guest speaker has my stamp of approval or not. Was it worth my time? Did the speaker give me knowledge that I didn’t have before? Was my life changed after listening to what they had to say? Let’s find out.

Today, we listened to the guest speaker Dee Thompson, who has her own personal blog called “Dash of Dee.” I have to admit, that name is very catchy. Dee is a content creator who, you can tell, is very passionate and loves what she does. As someone who will probably never become an influencer, my original thought was, “Oh, she couldn’t possibly have anything to teach me.” But I was wrong. I can  relate to her a lot more than I thought I would. Firstly, I resonated with her, saying she was struggling to find her niche and constantly experiencing changes in employment. I know the struggle of changing the whole course of your life because that was me once upon a time. She originally went to school for something different from her career path. I resonated with that because I studied early childhood education for two years before switching over to media studies. Her explanation of her situation, which was similar to mine, allowed me to listen with an open mind to what she had to say.

To my surprise, Dee taught me many things about the backend of being a content creator. I really enjoyed how she made it a point to find what works for you, don’t rush the process, and “love it before you launch it.” You can tell she is very knowledgeable about the demand of content creation. She explained to supply content where there is demand, such as upcoming holidays and trends. I really appreciated the way she addressed the importance of mental health in the context of content creation. Her advice on maintaining integrity and knowing when to take a break was incredibly valuable to me as I also struggle with my mental health from time to time.

Overall, Dee had some amazing insight to share with the class.

Therefore, she has SOPHIA’S STAMP OF APPROVAL! I am very excited to learn more from other guest speakers in the future. Stay tuned and talk soon!

Land Acknowledgment

The University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College are located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Black Alders” in the Mississauga language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all. We acknowledge and honour the land we are walking on, the moccasin tracks of our ancestors and the footprints of the future generations to come.
