Individuals share specific cultures and shared beliefs, Values, and Customs in order to communicate and understand the world around them. The animation and comic Attack on Titan follows a united nation that develops an army in order to fight off Titans and their opposing nations in war. After being attacked and losing their family, these characters come together in order to fight for what they believe in. To serve justice, protect and reach freedom. The survey corps became the Freedom Corps and established a symbol or logo that represents each part of the service. Their logos and designs resonate with the team representing shields to protect, feathers of freedom, and military swords to serve justice and come together as one.

Their military was divided into three branches: the Survey Corps, which explores outside human territory to hostile areas in a bid for expansion; the Garrison, which patrols and maintains the Walls, keeping Titans out and acting as the first to engage if the gate is destroyed and the Military Police who maintain law and order within royalty and government. However, these shared beliefs and values that bring them together can also set them apart. They lack diversity within their freedom services.

Later, when the corps ventures out to opposing nations, their team and military are equipped to extend to include diverse nations across the sea including black, Asian etc. The inclusion created an environment where everyone feels welcome and treated with respect to participate. Equity, fairness and respectful treatment are delivered with equality as the result. Their cultures, beliefs and values are transferred as well as their skills which creates a better understanding of each side. This ends the war and they both recognize they are people just the same even though they have different identities. Diversity is vital to demonstrate the demographic mix of communities which can focus on creating increased diverse representation. Although each side of the war has its differences in innovation, languages and meanings, together they can put their differences aside and focus on building a cohesive understanding union (which is the end peaceful result).

Guest speaker Nneka Elliot states that she left her previous reporting job to venture into social media. As a Black woman, there were few other individuals that were like her in these spaces. However, she believed in exploring more broadening her scope and finding herself. Online gave her the opportunity to explore who she was as a black AND Canadian person. Extending on YouTube with others lets her explore and learn about digital spaces by contributing to her background.

She wants to be a part of something to find herself more by carving out spaces on social media to be successful herself as in this space Black women can flourish.

Inclusion is vital. “Your audience wants to see themselves represented within your brand…that’s the simple truth. They want to make sure that companies understand their needs, thoughts, viewpoints, hopes, fears, and concerns. Connect with your audience with messaging that is meaningful, authentic, empathic, and relatable (Cuker).” It holds accountability and builds a diverse team with backgrounds to effectively combine unique knowledge with ideas, experiences, and points of view from other team members to connect with their audiences such as the joined diverse unity in Attack on Titan (Cucker).

Land Acknowledgment

The University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College are located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Black Alders” in the Mississauga language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all. We acknowledge and honour the land we are walking on, the moccasin tracks of our ancestors and the footprints of the future generations to come.
