In this week’s Wisdom Waves blog post, I’m diving into the inspiring talk by Nitin Goyal, a Data Analyst at Hootsuite with a Bachelor of Commerce from the UBC Sauder School of Business. Since joining Hootsuite in 2018, Nitin has honed his analytical skills, working across multiple industries and becoming a master of transforming data into meaningful insights. His message was clear: success in data analysis, and in any field, requires both curiosity and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Follow Your Curiosity

A central theme of Nitin’s talk was the idea of “following your curiosity” to carve out a meaningful career path. He encouraged us to take time to understand ourselves, our motivations, and where we want to go. Curiosity, he suggested, is what fuels passion and creates purpose in our work. In his journey, curiosity led him to become more data-driven, inspiring him to take additional online courses and gain the mathematical and analytical skills that strengthened his professional expertise.

Nitin’s story is a reminder to actively seek opportunities that stretch us and expose us to new skills. For those looking to grow in a particular field, he recommended always being on the lookout for resources—whether online courses, certifications, or hands-on projects—that can deepen our knowledge and provide new avenues for professional development.

The Role of a Data Analyst: Making Data Meaningful

Nitin emphasized that math is a prerequisite for data analysis, as it enables analysts to work with complex data sets and identify trends. However, being a great data analyst isn’t just about numbers; it’s about turning numbers into narratives. “Your primary role is to distill all that information and communicate it to stakeholders,” he shared, stressing the importance of visualizations in making data accessible. Data analysts are translators, bridging the gap between raw data and actionable insights.

Visualizations, he explained, are essential because many stakeholders aren’t familiar with the intricacies of data analysis. To make a real impact, an analyst has to make their findings clear and compelling, presenting insights in a way that resonates with the audience’s goals and priorities. Whether it’s through graphs, charts, or reports, the objective is to make data easy to understand and implement.

Nitin’s insights were a powerful reminder of the importance of being proactive, curious, and adaptable in our careers. He showed us that following our curiosity opens new doors, helping us build fulfilling careers through continuous learning and growth. As data analysts, or in any field, effective communication is key; translating complex data into visualizations makes insights accessible to stakeholders and amplifies our impact. Additionally, identifying and tracking KPIs helps businesses stay aligned on shared goals, providing a roadmap for real success.

This wave of knowledge from Nitin’s journey encourages us all to dive deeper into our fields, staying curious and committed to growth, while constantly refining our skills to make meaningful contributions.

Land Acknowledgment

The University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College are located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Black Alders” in the Mississauga language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all. We acknowledge and honour the land we are walking on, the moccasin tracks of our ancestors and the footprints of the future generations to come.
