This week, our Content Strategies class had the privilege of hearing from Marco Renda, who leads marketing, sponsorships, and partnerships at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE). Marco shared his professional journey and provided  insights into the world of sports marketing.

Marco’s story began at York University’s Schulich School of Business, where he pursued a BBA and discovered his passion for partnerships and marketing. His career at MLSE started during his third year of university when he participated in their case competition. This opportunity allowed him to pitch creative partnership strategies for MLSE teams like the Raptors and Maple Leafs. His impressive performance landed him an internship, kicking off his exciting career in marketing.

What stood out most was how Marco’s work goes beyond traditional marketing. He bridges brands and sports teams, creating campaigns that resonate with fans while achieving business goals. One standout campaign Marco shared was the Raptors’ “Subcultures” series in partnership with Subway. This project celebrated the diversity of Raptors fans across Canada, weaving heartwarming stories with creative marketing elements. The campaign even included a meet-and-greet with Scotty Barnes, combining fan engagement with authentic storytelling.

Marco emphasized the dynamic nature of his role, blending sales and creativity. He spends his time analyzing brands that align with MLSE teams, brainstorming innovative activation ideas, and executing cross platform campaigns. From Instagram Reels to long form YouTube content, Marco and his team ensure their strategies resonate with diverse audiences, from Gen Z to lifelong sports enthusiasts.

For students like us, Marco’s advice was clear: any experience is valuable. Whether through internships, personal projects, or university clubs, the key is to explore, learn, and discover what excites you. He encouraged us to embrace creativity, saying, “You never know what might come out of a conversation or an idea.”

As Marco reminded us, “The best ideas often come from collaboration and curiosity.” Hearing Marco’s journey was both inspiring and insightful—proof that hard work, creativity, and passion can lead to incredible opportunities.

Land Acknowledgment

The University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College are located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Black Alders” in the Mississauga language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all. We acknowledge and honour the land we are walking on, the moccasin tracks of our ancestors and the footprints of the future generations to come.
