What’s in the Telescope?

This week’s guest speaker was Kayla Stugart, a Senior Communications Strategist from Vancouver, BC. Kayla holds a Master’s in Communications from Royal Roads University and a Bachelor of Commerce with a focus in marketing from Toronto Metropolitan University. Over the past decade, she has navigated various sectors, including the charitable and nonprofit sectors, and now leads communications for the Abbotsford School District. Her work includes external communications, social media strategy, crisis management, and content creation. Kayla emphasized the importance of using social media to amplify the voices and stories of educators and students, highlighting the diversity of her community.

How Do the Stars Align?

Kayla’s journey as a Communications Strategist strongly connects with my interest in media management and personal branding. Her focus on content creation and branding, especially in public institutions, echoes my desire to blend media strategies with astrology for a more holistic approach to personal and corporate branding. I particularly relate to her emphasis on strategic content creation and storytelling, which aligns with my own goals of using social media to share my unique blend of astrology and media insights. Additionally, her advice on maintaining a professional online presence while still being authentic resonates with the balance I am trying to strike as I develop my own brand.

My Guiding Star:

Kayla’s journey taught me several valuable lessons that I will carry forward. First, her ability to adapt and thrive in different sectors from nonprofits to public education reminded me that flexibility and openness to new opportunities are key in building a dynamic career. Like her, I plan to approach every role with a willingness to grow and learn. Second, her focus on storytelling as a way to engage audiences and bring corporate messaging to life emphasized the importance of creativity in content strategy. Moving forward, I will prioritize storytelling in my content creation, making sure that each post connects with my audience on a personal level. Lastly, her advice on digital professionalism through curating social media in a way that aligns with my career goals reinforced the importance of maintaining an authentic yet strategic online presence. This is something I will actively incorporate as I continue building my brand in media and astrology.

Land Acknowledgment

The University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College are located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Black Alders” in the Mississauga language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all. We acknowledge and honour the land we are walking on, the moccasin tracks of our ancestors and the footprints of the future generations to come.
