Discussing Covid-19 & the Impact it had on the Sports Media World
Covid-19 no doubt took a massive toll on pretty much everything and affected everyone’s lives in some sort of way. One of the main and most prominent ways it took a toll was through the media world, with how people had to create and shift content, as well as to continue to adapt to a plethora of changes. Much of the content being posted was through the online world and shifted towards a social media boom as this was a vital source in expressing content during covid.
The sports media industry more specifically had to find ways to pivot, and tap into an audience that was not tapped into as much previously. With the lack of being able to produce live content because of the lockdown many started to create their own personal content to show off and stay relevant with sports stories throughout covid. Many started a fresh, new account, or if they did not have a big online presence many teams and people in the industry wanted to build their presence on the internet.
With the lack of live coverage and strict mandates many sports reporters and personalities in the industry were unable to conduct their day to day work and instead had to create newsworthy content differently through online interviews and press conferences in order to get out a story. This was at the point that no one was allowed in any of the stadiums. Being able to adapt to the online world for sports media is what helped the industry to continue to move forward in the tough times of Covid-19.

This weeks guest speaker, and the final guest speaker is Andrea Boland who is currently a content strategist for West Jet. She spoke with us about how covid impacted not only all aspects of travel, but also how West Jet had to pivot their content. Andrea provided us valuable insight into just how much her industry was affected by the pandemic as well as ways that she was able to create exciting content in a tough period of time. Provided us more insight into her background of other careers before West Jet and showcased how she created her content before the pandemic struck. Overall, she gave us valuable information about creating content during covid and how important it is to adapt to ever-changing circumstances.
