Career Compass: Rishma Govani Edition

This week on Career Compass, we are analyzing advice from Rishma Govani, a communications professional with 25 years of experience in the media industry who worked with CBC, CTV and Global.

Know the Company

Rishma went in depth about how to make sure you are remaining on brand when creating content. She began discussing how it is important to recognize your brand’s mission, vision and values because these all can be valuable in ensuring your branding is consistent. If you are unaware of these, you may lead off track of the brand, and unintentionally mislead consumers. Additionally, your branding may look inconsistent, making it hard for you to reach your target audience. Knowing the goal behind everything you are working on is crucial for ensuring your branding is as consistent as possible. This also is something she related to news, looking at her field, this is incredibly important in her field. In broadcasting and journalism placements, it is important to follow this rule so that you don’t provide people with misinformation.

Read, Read, Read!

Rishma’s closing advice was to ensure you are reading. This can help you do your best writing, and ensure you are properly informed. If you are in the journalism field, knowing what is happening in the world and staying updated on news is crucial for ensuring you are well-educated and providing the public with factual knowledge. Not only reading the news but also reading books can help you get a better understanding of grammar and well-written pieces!

Land Acknowledgment

The University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College are located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Black Alders” in the Mississauga language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all. We acknowledge and honour the land we are walking on, the moccasin tracks of our ancestors and the footprints of the future generations to come.
