Be brave to do what you love
After graduating from college, should we pursue full-time employment or freelance work? Mellissa tells us through her experience: be brave to do what you love, and keep trying until you find the job that suits you best.
Mellissa’s first internship after graduation was as a digital and communications coordinator at a children’s web company. From there, she gradually found the job and company she truly loved. Her experience gives us three valuable lessons:
- Always have a goal. How can you find a job you love? Melissa tells us always to have a goal and put effort into it. When Refinery 29 posted a student internship position in Canada, she wanted to intern as a non-student and applied actively. When she wanted to work at JAM3 headquarters, she tailored her resume specifically. She always has a goal, bravely seeks what she loves, takes the initiative, and seizes opportunities.
- What suits you best is the best. Although Mellissa loves freelance work and experiential marketing, she also tells us that freelancing can be fulfilling, as can full-time employment. Freelancing and full-time work are simply choices, more like lifestyle choices. We can choose one or combine both. Don’t feel pressured. Ultimately, we must keep trying in both work and life until we find the best way to work for ourselves.
- Learn to stand out at work. Mellissa tells us there are secrets to standing out at work, too.
The first secret is the recommendation. When we gain our boss’s approval in our current job, we can ask them to recommend us when applying for the next job. This will help us gain the trust of the new employer more quickly.
The second secret is taking the initiative. When faced with a job we like, we should actively showcase our strengths, take on more responsibilities, and introduce ourselves to others proactively.
The third secret is confidence. We must always believe in ourselves and believe that we can do a good job. Our confidence will ultimately win the trust of others.
Through Mellissa’s career experience, I am full of confidence in post-college work. I also want to pursue the job I love bravely, always keep my goals in mind, find the job that suits me best through continuous trials, and stand out at work through my efforts.
