Essence Cosmetics: Photo Series
The following is a 10-image photo story capturing cozy, nostalgic, and everyday realism. The series focuses on authentic use of Essence Cosmetics products in natural settings, highlighting warmth, texture, and lived-in environments with well-loved products, showcasing their use even over time. The goal was to establish the reliability of their products throughout the day in various environments commonly used for makeup application. Like at a vanity, on the floor, on a bed, office desk, near a window and in a bathroom, at the front of a mirror and sink.
Lays Halloween Audio Ad
A 30-second Halloween-themed radio ad for Lays that blends cozy fall atmosphere with spooky, festive storytelling by the campfire. This assignment focused on rhythm, pacing, and capturing brand personality through audio.
Short Video Film: A POV Reflection on Birthdays
A reflective short film exploring themes of solitude, nostalgia, and emotional growth through a personal narrative. The project combines visual storytelling with ambient audio, with mainly first-person perspective shots and narration with documentary-style pacing.
Social Media Edit in POV Style
A concise, platform-optimized edit of the reflection film designed for social media. This version emphasizes pacing, emotional beats, and visual hooks tailored for mobile viewing rather than relying on audio storytelling, which reflects the current fast pace of social media, where people often watch videos muted.
Reflection
At the start of the semester, my videography skills were fairly limited, while my photography lacked depth in a professional context. I had some experience with cameras, but mostly captured spontaneous moments. This course pushed me to plan intentionally and tell clear visual stories, especially for advertisements. I experimented with lighting to shape the mood and learned the basics of audio editing, which taught me to consider pacing, layering, and rhythm. Overall, I was encouraged to use my strengths while also confronting my weaker areas to grow as a creator.
One of the most meaningful projects I completed was a short film centred on the feeling of being alone on birthdays and growing up. While emotionally challenging, it provided a creative outlet that allowed me to express something personal. In contrast, the Lay’s Halloween audio ad was the most enjoyable project because it allowed me to explore storytelling in a lighter, more playful way. Balancing these different assignments helped me identify the types of creative challenges I enjoy most.
Managing expectations was the most difficult part of creating media content. I often hesitated to start because I worried my final product wouldn’t match the vision I had in my head. Over time, I realized that the uncertainty is part of the learning process and that adapting to unexpected changes often leads to stronger work.
The project I am most proud of is the social media edit of my short film. The transitions, pacing, and music complemented the visuals in a way that strengthened the narrative even without dialogue. Moving forward, I hope to continue balancing structure with flexibility and pushing myself beyond what feels familiar. This course showed me that creative growth comes from embracing challenges and trusting my instincts.
