An inspiring initiative is taking place in the vibrant city of Etobicoke, bringing together seniors to explore the world of art in its various forms.

The Arts Etobicoke Senior Arts Program has become a haven for artistic expression, promoting physical and visual art to enhance both mental and physical well-being among seniors. This program, designed to engage and enrich seniors’ lives, offers various classes throughout the week, with a special focus on physical exercise and visual arts.

One of the highlights of the Arts Etobicoke Senior Arts Program is the energetic and fun-filled Wednesday exercise and dance class led by the spirited instructor, Kate. The seniors gather for an hour of lively movement, set to the backdrop of their favorite hits from the 70s and 80s. This class promotes physical health and fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among the participants.

Yunis, a 90-year-old woman, says she looks forward to her Wednesdays to get her groove on with her friends.

“I always loved art, from the age of ten but I never really started pursuing it until I was 80.”

The program coordinators at the center advocate the belief that individuals of any age can tap into their inherent passion for art, emphasizing that no one is ever too young or too old to explore and express their creative instincts.

“Anyone and everyone can be an artist; age is just a number,” says program coordinator Sonya Young.

"Getting to pick up a paintbrush and some scissors again really unleashes our inner childhood. This program makes us feel young again."

An experienced dance instructor, Kate tailors her classes to accommodate various fitness levels, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the fun.

The music selections from the disco era and the electrifying beats of the 80s provide the perfect soundtrack for the seniors to let loose, express themselves, and, most importantly, have a good time.

As the week progresses, the focus shifts from physical activity to the world of visual arts every Thursday. The seniors gather for an art class guided by skilled instructors who impart their painting, drawing, and other visual arts knowledge. The atmosphere is one of creativity and encouragement, with participants learning new techniques and discovering hidden talents.

The art classes provide a platform for self-expression, allowing seniors to explore their artistic inclinations in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Whether they are picking up a paintbrush for the first time or refining their existing skills, the Thursday art classes foster a sense of accomplishment and pride in the participants.

The Arts Etobicoke Senior Arts Program goes beyond merely providing classes; it offers a holistic approach to well-being. Engaging in physical exercise and artistic endeavors has enhanced cognitive function, boosted mood, and contributed to overall mental health.

The program recognizes the importance of fostering a sense of purpose and community among seniors, especially considering the challenges of loneliness and the difficulty of making new friends as one ages.

In the words of Margaret, a program participant, “This class has been a lifeline for me. Not only have I rediscovered my love for painting, but I’ve also made friends who share my passion. It’s like a second family.”

The Arts Etobicoke Senior Arts Program stands as a shining example of how the arts can bring joy, vitality, and a sense of community to the lives of seniors.

Through the dedicated efforts of instructors like Kate and the commitment of the participants, this program is not just about learning new skills; it’s about creating a space where seniors can thrive, express themselves, and build lasting connections.

77% of Seniors reported that joining Arts Etobicoke has helped boost their self-esteem.

Young says the goal of this program is to serve as a social hub where seniors can come together, share ideas, and collaborate on artistic endeavors.

“The best part of my job is getting to see so many genuine friendships being made and even making a few friends of my own.”

The Seniors Arts Program at Cloverdale Mall by Art’s Etobicoke offers visual art and a movement program every Wednesday and Thursday at 11 am. Registration is now open for the new year, and the community warmly welcomes new members and volunteers to join this vibrant journey of creativity and connection.
