Rishma Govani (@RishmaGovani) / X

We are delighted to hear from Rishma Govani this week as our guest presenter. She has been in the communications industry for 25 years and has a lot of experience in the field. I was so intrigued about how she mentioned that she believes no one career needs to be a linear path and I definitely agree with that. Over the course of the semester, we have heard from many different guest presenters and after reflecting I have found that many of them may have started in a specific industry but after working in those fields or gaining other opportunities their originally career plan may have changed. I find this very inspiring because I am not fully sure of what I may want to do post-graduation and seeing that many of these people also had so many different opportunities that led them to their current career is very comforting.

Rishma started out working in traditional television but later transitioned to communications and media relations. She is currently working with global news and has been with the company for 10 years. However, something I also found very interesting was her commitment to writing children’s novels and creating discussion around diversity and allowing the youth to learn about these very important topics. I find this very inspiring and interesting. Tellwell Blog

An interesting question that she answered was what her day to day looks like when working with her teams. She points out that the communications world is moving fast and is ever changing. Within earned media, she highlights that there is always room to seek opportunities. At global, she is making sure that the employees are aligned with the brand’s values they are representing and there is no conflict of interest. I find that this is such an important area surrounding ensuring that companies are working with brands they align with. Through social media I have witnessed many scandals and issues arising because companies are not staying authentic to what they believe in. What Rishma said this I found it very interesting because it is defeinly true that keeping authenticity and a trustworthy atmosphere will only grow your company and your consumers trust

All in all, Rishma had many interesting insights, I would love to hear much more about her and even her interesting potion that she briefly touched upon about how she is an author that was awesome and inspiring to hear about.

Land Acknowledgment

The University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College are located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Black Alders” in the Mississauga language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all. We acknowledge and honour the land we are walking on, the moccasin tracks of our ancestors and the footprints of the future generations to come.
