Today we listened to a guest speaker named Dee Thompson who has been a blogger for quite some time and has her own blog called “Dash of Dee”. Listening to Dee Thompson and her journey from learning what blogging is to creating her brand within it and her ways around the blogging world is truly inspiring. As someone who hasn’t ever given much thought to blogging, I could comprehend what goes into blogging, how it can be successful, and tips that can not only help when doing your blogging but also correlate to everyday life.
She explained how blogging has undergone significant transformations since it first began, and understanding these changes is crucial for anyone looking to make their mark in this field, as a beginner or someone who has been blogging for some decent time. As Dee started her blogging career in 2011, she initially approached it with great enthusiasm, finding it much more appealing than the work she was currently doing. However, as the blogging landscape evolved, she recognized the need for a rebrand a few years later, especially given her first brand focused mainly on makeup which limited her to what she could talk about as the years progressed. This strategic move allowed her to better align her content with her growing interests and the needs of her audience. This also relates to our first reading by Paljug K. where finding out who your audience is and what they need is crucial to a successful business. It also helps you effectively use your resources to your advantage so others are more interested in the product or service you’re working for/promoting. Yet, as Dee mentions, finding out what interests you while making sure it is something you can continue to do long term is crucial in her eyes.
Her speaking of her experience on how she got into blogging was what spoke to me the most. Starting with a job in something completely different, to then jumping to an internship with the Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Magazine. Proving it’s okay to not know what you want to do and that you can still find success while starting with uncertainty. As someone who currently is unsure what they want to do when school finishes, I found this comforting that there is always time to jump ships and figure out what it is that works for you best. As a whole, making sure you’re doing the right things for success while maintaining the proper reasoning and staying true to yourself is the end goal and what I learned from Dee today.
