Today I heard from Kyle Thomas. His presentation was very interesting to me and I learnt a lot. In short I learned that in the business world, being adaptable and solving problems effectively are key skills to make sure you have. Kyle, who is an experienced freelancer and business owner also shared valuable lessons about freelancing and  understanding client needs. Through his presentation I learned that his approach focuses on more than just providing services. He works to solve his clients’ business problems. For example, instead of just creating a website for a client, he  would suggest a full plan that included email marketing and social media to help the client achieve their goals. Listening to this I learned that even in the workplace it’s important to always go above and beyond.

Next, was the research aspect which plays a big role in Kyle’s process. He makes it a point to fully understand the client’s business and audience. In doing this it allows him to make sure he’s doing the best job he possibly can and help his clients in the proper way. This includes learning about the client’s goals, challenges and  their online presence. Additionally he studies how their audience behaves to see what he can do to get them to react the way he wants.

Building strong partnerships has also been a key part of Kyle Thomas’ journey. Early on, he teamed up with agencies to offer services like social media management. These partnerships allowed him to deliver a wide range of solutions while maintaining high quality. By acting as a middleman between clients and service providers, Kyle was able to earn trust and build lasting relationships which helped him throughout his journey.

Listening carefully to clients is another important part of Kyle’s approach in my opinion. Since clients often compare multiple service providers, showing that you truly understand their needs can make a big difference. By listening closely, Kyle was able to ensure trust with them and that his solutions match what the client is looking for.

Finally, Kyle touched on the growing role of AI in freelancing. While AI can save time on tasks like research and idea generation. Kyle believes human input is still essential. By combining AI tools with critical thinking and problem solving skills, freelancers can create unique solutions that truly help clients succeed. As a whole I really enjoyed Kyle Thomas’ presentation and found it quite interesting to hear his journey. He had a lot of great insight that I will take with me when I go into the workplace.

The University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College are located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Black Alders” in the Mississauga language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all. We acknowledge and honour the land we are walking on, the moccasin tracks of our ancestors and the footprints of the future generations to come.
