As I dive deeper into the iceberg of content strategy, this week I got to learn about Ebony Renee and her journey into becoming a fashion editor at Refinery29. She shared about her career and the insights she has on content creation, networking and personal branding.

Guest Speaker: Ebony Renee

Ebony’s career goes from Toronto to the UK and one of her takeaways from this was the power of networking. Networking doesn’t necessarily mean meeting someone in person and knowing who they are but it can be a simple engagement on Instagram. Although unconventional, it was shocking that her networking through Instagram is what led to her biggest opportunity, which was an interview with British Glamour. For someone who is uncomfortable meeting new people and striking conversation, it helps to know there are multiple ways to network and make connections.

She also touched on the topic of maintaining integrity in the field of content creation, which reinforced some of the same teachings of Dee Thompson, a previous guest speaker I wrote about. Ebony talks about being transparent when doing sponsored content but also making sure that editorial content is unbiased. Through these words, I realised that building a reputable personal brand is important but maintaining that brand is just as important. Being transparent allows viewers to know that they can trust your brand and that you are authentic.

Overall Reflection

Taking what I previously learned from personal branding, building a strong, reputable brand is important in building a successful brand. Ebony brought more concepts into it with her career, showing how networking, ethics and authenticity are factors that you also need to look at when building a brand. Her journey shows how all these factors combined can create a successful career.

Overall, Ebony’s insights provided lessons on building a brand and the impacts that networking, ethics and authenticity has on your personal brand. As a result, all these factors are essential to a successful career and the world of content creation.
