This week, I had the pleasure of hearing from Marco Renda, a marketing and sponsorship expert based in the Greater Toronto Area who specializes in purpose driven sports business. His talk resonated deeply with me, as his journey mirrors some of my own aspirations and struggles. Marco’s story is one of determination, curiosity, and creativity, and he left me feeling inspired to embrace every opportunity that comes my way.
Marco started his career as an intern, much like many of us who are just beginning to navigate the vast world of media and communications. He admitted that while he always knew he wanted to work in marketing, he didn’t initially know where his passion would fit. His openness to learning and gaining real world experience helped him carve out a space in a field he loves.
One of the most compelling parts of Marco’s talk was how he explained the behind the scenes process of marketing partnerships. He shared how teams identify evolving industries and opportunities that align with their goals, while also keeping in mind what will benefit the team, players, and fans. It’s not just about creating deals, it’s about exciting and engaging the audience in meaningful ways.

Marco emphasized that some of the best creative work often arises from challenges. By collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, marketing teams can turn obstacles into opportunities for innovation. He highlighted the importance of curiosity, staying tuned in to what’s trending across different types of media and content is key to staying ahead in the game.
One of his most powerful messages was about the value of experience. Whether it’s an internship, part time job, personal project, or even life experiences, everything you do adds value to your skill set. For Marco, every opportunity was a stepping stone that built the foundation for his career.
Marco’s talk reminded me that success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes a mix of passion, persistence, and a willingness to learn at every stage. His journey proves that staying curious, embracing challenges, and engaging with the world around us can lead to truly impactful work.
If there’s one thing I’ll carry with me from Marco’s lecture, it’s this: Any experience is good experience. So, whether you’re an intern, a part-timer, or working on your own passion projects, don’t underestimate the value of what you’re learning along the way. It could be the start of something incredible.
