Cleaning up Content & Flexibility

This week we heard from Huy Tran. Huy was very interesting to listen to since he talked about how adaptive you have to be when working media especially in the 21st century. The biggest takeaway I received from his interview was to identify trends and gaps in the market then fill those gaps. Huy explained that he was able to start at home cocktail kits at ABURI to fill a void in the market during lockdowns. The ability to find gaps in the market is a way to make yourself stand out at any position that you work at. This skill is very important for someone like me who is just starting out at a company.  Flexibility is imperative for working in the media because you never know what is going to happen. This was explained to me by Huy as well, He proved that you need to be able to recover from whatever situation is thrown your way.

For the readings this week I read an article from Meghan Casey. This article was called “How to Clean Up Your Content Mess” it talks about how to clean up your content to make it more effective and less cluttered. Meghan’s article used an analogy of a closet full of clothes needing a cleanup. This metaphor makes a lot of sense because closets can get cluttered the same way a social media page can become full of clutter.

A messy pile of laundry next to a clean pile of laundry.

Overcluttered social media could be overstimulating or just plain ineffective. Meghan explained that she uses a strategy called ROT where R is redundant posts, O is outdated, and T is trivial content. Meghan goes on to explain a few other steps, tricks and tips to make your content more effective, but I believe the most applicable is ROT. This is because I did the same thing to my social media pages not that long ago. I used to have more than 100 posts on my Instagram but afterwards I was left with 12 posts. Cleaning out old content makes your socials look so much cleaner. Bosses often go through your socials after you send in a resume. Having a clean well put together social media will make you look more presentable, especially if you are applying for a job where you work with online content. You want to ensure that your posts are doing a good job of portraying who you are and not cluttered full of wasteful posts. It felt good to go through and remove posts that I didn’t feel were relevant anymore. I think that we should, especially as future content creators go through and take note of what we have on our own socials and practice going through our posts. We should make sure that we aren’t leaving up some dusty old posts from 10 years ago that we would be embarrassed of now. This will eventually help us as we are doing audits and cleaning up our professional socials as full-time content managers.
