In this past week, we were fortunate to have blogger, Dee Thomson give us a little insight and behind the scenes of what goes into the work of a blogger. She emphasized the importance of taking your time and really finding what message you want to get across and that the name you choose should give an idea to the audience what you’re going to be about. I think there’s a connection with knowing what you want to say and the article written by Katharine Paljug; who describes how to understand your target audience. Once you know what you want your blog to be about, you need to know how to target the right people who would be interested in the blog. Dee explained some important tools for bloggers. One being Pinterest as a way to keep up with trends, which if you’ve never used, there’s a bit of everything on there and most likely has you covered with whatever your blog would be about. Another tool is a mailing list. Having a signup right on your page is a great way to keep connected with your audience and keep them informed and remind them about your blog to keep them coming back. Which goes back to Katharine Paljug article. With a mailing list you’re not wasting your time on people who aren’t interested in what you’re saying because the people who signed up are your target audience. Two key questions to ask about your target audience are: What are your customers’ interests and what social media platforms do they use? If you know what their interests are, you can figure out if they’re in your target audience, and if they are, knowing what platforms they use will help you know where to focus your time. You don’t want to waste time and resources on groups who aren’t interested or sites that won’t help spread your name.
