After an insightful class lecture on branding, and a conversation with our guest speaker, Dee Thompson, I learned how consistent, quality content that in supports your brand vision matters not just to your customers/viewers, but also to the future and growth of your company. Check out the top three branding takeaways that I learned today and why it’s important to consider them when you are making your next move!

1. Choose a niche and stay true to your vision

Before you begin anything, the first thing you want to do is brainstorm the things that you are passionate about and believe is worth your time and effort. For example, there may be a blogger who is passionate about gaming and would want to write blog posts around the latest games, trends in the gaming world, launch events and provide reviews on popular games or gaming devices. Even though that’s what you want your content to be about, it shouldn’t stop there. Think about your brands style guide and reflect on how you’d want your overall aesthetic to also represent your brand and the content it covers. One example of this is Gamer Gal Blog . If you go on her website, you will notice all her blogs are about gaming which automatically tells you the type of content she covers. However, it doesn’t stop there. Her fonts and colour scheme are also feminine which also fits in with the gamer girl aesthetic. She also uses a gaming controller as her brand logo which also fits in with the overall theme of gaming. This just shows that staying true to your brand goes beyond the content itself. You have to look at all aspects of your work and make sure it is a cohesive representation of your brands vision.

2. Know Who Your Audience Is

Once you choose a niche, start focusing on who your target audience is. Is it going to be new moms? Fashion lovers? Foodies? Make sure you creating content in a way that attracts your target audience and fulfils their needs and interests. If you want a better in-depth picture of who your existing audience members as, create a user persona. A user persona is a fact-based visual representation of your audience or customers. It provides an in-depth analysis of them and gives information about your customer’s needs, experiences, behaviours, personalities, challenges and much more! It’s especially great for certain industries such as retail stories, online businesses, or even service providers because user personas can help you find a proactive solution to your problems, improve user experience and improve your product marketing.

3. Keep up with the trends

Utilize your networks and social media to draw inspiration and learn about the latest trends. Avoid creating content that has been told before and instead, add your own twist and don’t be afraid to try new things to boost your brand and connect with your audience. Utilize different social media sites such as Pinterest or Instagram to see what the latest trending searches are. A great resource to check out is Google Trends. Find out what the top searches are in your country and see how you can implement it in your business or blogs to stay relevant. Not only will you gain online traction, but you would be able to humanize your brand which ultimately leads to building more trust between you and your audience.

Land Acknowledgment

The University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College are located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Black Alders” in the Mississauga language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all. We acknowledge and honour the land we are walking on, the moccasin tracks of our ancestors and the footprints of the future generations to come.
