Discussing how Algorithms are Powerful, and how the Content is shown

Algorithms serve as the backbone of any social media, as it determines how, and what kind of content any person likes to view the most. It determines what content should be showcased more on your feed through the interaction that the specific post receives. It filters out content that is not nearly as important and aims to focus on the content that the user will appreciate most through the power of the algorithm.

For example, if your social media is heavily focused on showcasing sports content, the algorithm will determine that these are the posts the user wants to see the most and will continue to prioritize that content to appear on their feed. There can also be downsides as the content may not be as powerful and could be at risk of being buried by the platform if it is not deemed as “quality”, or if it does not have nearly enough interaction.

The outreach of content on social media platforms directly relates to the concept of algorithms. Content outreach in a nutshell is what an algorithm does, it promotes and spreads the content that is deemed valuable for the consumer. In order for the outreach of any content to be powerful, it must contain any and all elements that want to appeal to the desired target audience. It must look visually appealing and the content should be conveyed in a forceful manner. Following these steps will determine a strong outreach of content and showcasing what people desire in the production of the content is key to a strong outreach.

Our guest speaker this week was Nitin Goyal, who has worked at Hootsuite since 2018,  he shared his insight on how data drives the content that is put out on any social media platform. He provides all the data needed from the content that Hootsuite puts out and reports this data to all of his internal stakeholders. The internal stakeholders within the company review the data and insights to see how their content is stacking up and look to see how the public is receiving their content. Metrics determine is the business is moving in the right direction, this goes for all companies as one of the biggest KPIs is profit, and if the brand is not generating profit then it is not moving in the proper direction. Nitin was insightful and gave us a great analysis into the data driven aspects of content.

Land Acknowledgment

The University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College are located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Black Alders” in the Mississauga language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all. We acknowledge and honour the land we are walking on, the moccasin tracks of our ancestors and the footprints of the future generations to come.
