A Reflection on the Course
Given the tech landscape we live in currently, I am sure that many of you had a device capable of recording video at a fairly young age. I remember getting an iPod Touch for Christmas when I was around 11 and I would mainly use it to record videos using the various special effects apps that were available at the time. Eventually, as I got older I would record and edit videos with my friends that, in retrospect, were quite bad. What making those videos gave me was an appreciation for the art of video recording and editing, which are also the things that I enjoyed doing the most in this course. I think where I improved the most was with cinematography and knowing how to pick certain shots. When I used to record videos casually I would typically just do flat camera angles and most likely did not respect the rule of thirds at all, while now I can look out for those things specifically to make the shot come out much nicer. While recording the videos was a lot of fun, I will say that the most annoying part of the process was achieving proper light balance and exposure with the camera. The reason I had so much difficulty with this is most likely due to my choice of filming locations, which were primarily in my father’s rental. The light in his place is fairly minimal and inconsistent, which led to me having to do a lot of fiddling with the camera settings to get a good shot, and unfortunately, sometimes I just was not able to do it without the footage becoming very noisy in the blacks of the shot. I would say that I am most proud of my photography assignment because I think that the photos taken do not have many blemishes and are fairly clear for the most part, sans some shoddy focusing in some places. Overall, I enjoyed this course quite a bit, as it has given me a greater appreciation for the tools that media professionals have to use daily, and it makes me excited to see if I get to use any of these in the future.
