Reflection
Before this semester I had never used a camera that wasn’t my phone. I’ve discovered that I enjoy taking pictures but I despise recording videos. As for editing, I’d say it’s a middle ground. I wouldn’t say my skills have improved much. I have very little to base this on since this is my first experience taking good photos, videos, and audio. Instead I’d say that I’ve gained skills in the first place (even if middling).
I’ve learned that my hands are very prone to shaking which does not make it easy to record video. I can get away with it when taking pictures to an extent since it’s only one frame I have to capture.
The most challenging assignment was the video assignment for me. I went home for the weekend (4 hour bus ride) to do an “anti-travel vlog” of my hometown. The entire time I was recording my parents were trying to rush me so none of my footage ended up being usable. After that I had to entirely change my idea because I was not going to wait till the next weekend and take another 4 hour bus ride home. I would rate this experience a nice 1/10.
My favourite assignment was the photo assignment (shocker). At the time I had been feeling pretty homesick and lonely, so I figured I would do loneliness as my theme. My lovely roommate Ella volunteered to be the subject of my photos, so all of them but 1 were taken in our dorm. I was shooting in the dark, so I had to come up with other ways to create some light so I wouldn’t have to have a super high shutter speed (my shaky hands can’t handle it). Most of the photos are lit with things I had laying around my room, like those fairy lights that I hung across my windowsill. This assignment involved a lot of improvising with lighting which I enjoyed quite a lot, trying to figure out what I can do to make it just a tiny bit brighter. I got to have fun tinkering with lighting, all while hanging out with my good friend. I would rate this experience a 8/10.
