The Media Production Toolkit class has definitely tested more of my creative abilities, rather than my academic abilities. When taking a look back at the beginning of the semester, it is amazing to see how much I’ve grown both technically and creatively. When the course began in September I had little to no experience with tools like cameras, editing platforms, and microphones, as the semester comes to an end, I can say that I have also grown creatively within my storytelling. An example of my growth from my portfolio would be my video assignment “Football Monday”. It is a great example of taking random everyday clips and making a story out of it.

My favourite part of the process was seeing the rough drafts of all of my work being completed into polished pieces. I enjoyed learning to edit different audios and sounds into my own work to create something more with something small. Although, I would say that my least favourite part of this process would be understanding how complex taking a proper picture is on a camera. I had no idea that taking a picture properly can be so technical with the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO.

The most important and significant thing I have learned through this course would be intentionality. Every choice made going into every assignment, every cut, colour, transition all communicates a story. I have realized while taking this course that effective media isn’t just about creativity but every decision made behind the creativity that supports the story.

The most challenging aspect of this course would definitely be the editing, even though it was my favorite thing to learn throughout the course, it was the most challenging aspect for me. All the different buttons, settings and all the different ways you can edit a video/audio can be very overwhelming. It is not enough to have a creative idea, the technicality and skill to execute it is what makes it so special.

When looking at the piece I am most proud of, it would be my video assignment, not only does it show my growth throughout the course, but it shows a really creative side to me. For the film I captured videos of my friends on a Monday night that we like to call “Football Mondays” I wanted to capture the moments between my friends then when getting all of the videos together I creatively decided to put a reality-like spin on it making it comedic and dramatic while showing my stronger side to my personality.

When looking at what skills I will apply to my future, a technical skill I have learned that I believe will help me the most was creating a portfolio. Learning all the different features to upload media, writing and links can be a very valuable skill that not most know. Considering I am planning to go to law school after my undergrad, I don’t believe that I will be using some of these skills as a job but now I know that whenever someone may need help to take pictures, work a camera, or even edit anything I have some skills to help and teach to others. As stated before, as one of my most significant things learned, I do believe that my skill of intentionality can help me in my future when it comes to law school with the idea that everything you do tells a story and creates the final product.

The inspiration for these photos come from my photography assignment covering the topic of “Girlhood”. I wanted to incorporate the idea of the girly moments throughout girlhood, while some other pictures incorporated are from in-class labs.

“The Making of A Monster” By Gabriella Giuliani

“The Making of A Monster” is a fictional story made to convince the listeners why true crime is so interesting. Many may find it disturbing to enjoy true crime documentaries while others such as myself enjoy the psychological aspect behind it all.
